“The Red Dress” - Great Falls National Park, Virginia

I have been pretty busy with other things lately and consequently haven’t had the chance to get out and shoot. Until I get some more new images, I may be posting some older images in my new “Random Images” section - a category where from time to time I will post older images that I feel like posting for whatever reason. I took this photograph about a week before I put my blog online and it was taken at Great Falls National Park, Virginia. The weather forecast called for overcast - not the best conditions for the grand scenic type of shot I was trying to accomplish. However, I decided to go anyway and see what I could come up with. At the very least I could sit next to the river and just relax a little. It turns out luck was with me on that day and some beautiful thin fog began to materialize. I captured many subtle images of the falls in fog with fall color in the background. The following image, however, is my favorite. I found this crimson red scrub oak on the cliffs surrounding the falls and used it in my foreground to add a punch of color to contrast with the foggy backdrop.

The Silent Salt Marsh

While I originally thought the only worthwhile image I took during my visit to Sandy Hook was the abstract that I previously posted, I “found” this one the other night and decided to process it. I think that it’s always good to go through the results of a trip on later dates - you never know what you may find. I processed this image with a soft focus effect (as in one of my earlier posts from Scott’s Run Nature Preserve). I hope you enjoy the image.

Scott’s Run Nature Preserve - Part 3

Here is yet another image I’ve recently processed from my trip a week and a half ago to Scott’s Run Nature Preserve near Great Falls, Virginia. I love the intense color just dripping off the trees combined with the harsh back lightning causing the leaves to sparkle and glow.

Sandy Hook Reflections

Hello all - I’m back from New Jersey and hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

I didn’t get to do much shooting over the break, but Kari and I did manage to make a trip to Sandy Hook to do some shooting and meet up with a friend, Vito Paratore. Photographically, it wasn’t my best trip ever, though I did manage to come away with some decent abstract images. Here is one of my favorites:

Sandy Hook Reflections

I believe that abstract images should be able to stand alone based solely on their visual interest, but for the sake of fun I will reveal the subject of the photograph in 2 days in my comments section. Please feel free to guess in the meantime!

Thanksgiving Break

Hello everyone. I will be traveling to northern New Jersey over Thanksgiving break and don’t plan to be back until Monday. I will try to make some posts while I’m there, but can’t promise anything. I hope everyone that celebrates Thanksgiving has a wonderful holiday, and everyone that doesn’t has a wonderful week!

Scott’s Run Nature Preserve - Part 2

Here’s another image I processed last night from Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. It is a rather chaotic scene, but I like the dappled light and the fall color. I used a special post processing technique on this image to give it a soft glow. I hope that you enjoy it.

A Visit to Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

This morning I went to a small stream about 10 minutes away from Great Falls National Park (a favorite haunt of mine). The stream is known as Scott’s Run and is located, of all places, in Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. This was my first time visiting the preserve, and it won’t be my last! The stream itself is runoff from one of northern Virginia’s crown jewels - Tyson’s Corner ( a huge mall :( . Isn’t northern Virginia great!). However, the forest around the stream is some of the prettiest I have seen, and surely the nicest Beech forest I’ve come across. I hope you enjoy the pictures and that thoughts of runoff and pollution won’t ruin the experience - although it is all the more reason to conserve what we have left.

Foggy Common Loon Pair

Common Loon Pair, Adirondack State Park, New York.

I’ll be doing a series of these “Featured Photographs” throughout the life of this blog. Every once in a while (when I feel like being productive) I’ll post an image and talk a little bit about it. I hope that through my blog I can tell people more about my images - why I like them, where they were shot, any stories behind the photograph, etc.

Before I go on, I should probably mention that my girlfriend Kari Post (more on her in later posts) is always making fun of me for a little thing called “favorites”. You see, I like a lot of things. The world amazes me. This causes me to have any number of favorite things at one time. My favorite bird is the Common Loon. Or was that Great Gray Owl? Blackburnian Warbler maybe? Favorite mammal you ask? That would be the Flying Squirrel … or was that White-tailed Deer? The same thing happens with any subject - fish, insects, trees, rocks, places, cars, you name it. I am positive you will notice this with many of my posts! Now, with that out of the way, onto the photograph.

The photograph was taken this summer (07′) on one of my favorite lakes - Moss Lake; photographing one of my favorite birds - the Common Loon ;) . Moss Lake is a small picturesque lake in the Adirondack Park of Upstate New York. During the summer and autumn when the nights are cool, thick fog often forms in the morning. Thick fog is one of my favorite conditions to photograph in, and the fog on these lakes is among the thickest I’ve personally run into. On this particular morning I managed to find the resident pair of loons (lovingly named Checkers and Lily) in my kayak and began following them around. I believe that the habitat in which an animal lives is as important (and often as beautiful) as the animal itself. Because of this, I often use wide angle lenses in my wildlife photography. By using my wide angle lens I was able to capture the ambiance of the foggy surroundings, the pair of loons, and the island in the middle of the lake (the island has a lovely osprey nest with an even more lovely osprey chick that loves to call 16 hours a day - a fun camping experience.)

I hope that you enjoy this photograph. It will always have a special place in my heart - even when far away from New York I can look at it and remember one of my favorite places to be. :)

About Chris Kayler

Hello! Welcome to my blog. This blog will cover a range of topics in the field of nature photography, conservation, equipment, my life and my photographs. My blog aims to be simple in design and rich in informative content as well as visual eye-candy. To navigate the different types of post, please refer to the Categories section on the right below the search function. “About Chris Kayler” leads to my biography, “Featured Photographs” is an in-depth look at some of my favorite images, “General” contains news or updates regarding my life or whereabouts, “Random Images” contains older images that I am working on currently or just feel like posting, and “Trip Reports” contains reports and images from my current travels.

A little about myself:

I first became fascinated with animal and plant life in upstate New York where I spent most of my early childhood. My appreciation for the natural world and a desire to show others its magic led me to develop a love for photography.

Chris Kayler (that’s me!) searching for Common Loons in the Adirondacks.

I spend many hours in the field familiarizing myself with wildlife and capturing their beauty and behavior in stunning images. My photographs display landscapes as well as wildlife, birds, and plants in their natural environment. I do not alter or heavily edit my photographs, preferring to show them as I find them. My images are a result of passion, patience, and hard work. I am 20 years old and currently live in Manassas, Virginia and am a student at Northern Virginia Community College. I plan to seriously pursue nature photography as a career.

With that, I’d just like to say - thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy your stay, learn a little, and maybe even have some fun.
