Layered Mountain Sunset, Shenandoah National Park, VA

I went with my friend Alex Mody and my girlfriend Kari Post to Shenandoah National Park, Virginia last week in search of White-tailed Deer bucks. We managed to find a few deep in the woods, but none in any photograph-able situations. Besides this, the sunset was quite nice, so I decided to make some images of the color near the horizon and the receding Blue Ridge mountains beneath. This image was one of the results.

Bright Foggy Sunrise, Great Falls National Park, Virginia

After a dawn of heavy fog at Great Falls National Park, Virginia, the sun eventually began to burn through. Making my way down to a large cascade, I started lining up compositions with the sun in the frame. To me, the sun was an integral part of the experience of that foggy morning that just begged to be included. By blending two exposures together in Photoshop CS3 I was able to carefully expose two separate photographs - one for the bright sky, and another for the darker water. As with any photograph, careful placement of essential compositional elements such as the sun, the mid-ground rocks, darker foreground rocks, and water ripples was crucial. In addition to the composition, I like the way the sun is casting shadows on the backsides of the rocks, as well as the way the strong light is enhancing the texture of the rushing water in the foreground.

Red Sunrise, Great Falls National Park, Virginia

After the week long high pressure system (clear skies), and having to work during the sunset of a lifetime right after tropical storm Hanna blew through (watched it out the window … not fun), I finally was able to create some good photographs during sunrise at Great Falls yesterday morning. Leaving my house under overcast skies, I wasn’t too hopeful. Arriving early, I made my way out to a small rock in the middle of a cascade and sat down to soak in the sounds, sights, and smells of the powerful river swollen with rain from the tropical storm days earlier. As I sat, a hint of barely discernible pink color began to slowly grow over time. Finding a composition, I waited in anticipation. Then, out of nowhere, the color picked up quickly as the sun shown through a small slit in the clouds, lighting up the undersides of the nearby clouds. It lasted 3 or 4 minutes at most, but I was able to make several nice images during that time frame. Overcast skies rarely come through and supply great colorful sunrises or sunsets, but when they do, they are usually spectacular.
