Peaks of Otter Salamander (Plethodon hubrichti) Walking on a Moss Covered Rock, Virginia

This is another of the salamanders I managed to find on my quick trip down to southern Virginia. The Peaks of Otter Salamander is only found in the Peaks of Otter region along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is distinguished mostly by it’s many gold/brassy flecks on its back. A very cool salamander!

This Saturday I will be leaving to travel down to North Carolina on a long vacation, and won’t be back until Friday. Similar to last spring’s trip to South Carolina, my primary focus will be on reptiles and amphibians, with a bit of landscape photography thrown in. I will also be bringing my kayak and am looking forward to paddling back into some deep swamps! I’ll try to update from the road, but if not, I’ll see you when I get back.

Falling Spring Falls on a Sunny Spring Day, George Washington National Forest, Virginia

Here is another one from my trip down to southern Virginia. Falling Spring Falls can be seen via a very quick hike up the road to a roadside overlook. Not exactly picturesque surroundings, but the view of the falls and the mountains receeding into the background sure made up for that! On this morning, I traveled as quickly as I could to get to these falls while a morning rainstorm was still producing overcast conditions, but ending up getting there as the sun began to peak out. In the end, I quite liked the light and the way it defined the mountains in the background.

Southern Two-lined Salamander (Eurycea cirrigera), George Washington National Forest, Virginia

During my trip down to southwestern VA to visit one of my friends, I also made a point of seeking out a few species of salamander that I had yet to see or photograph. This species, the Southern Two-lined Salamander, appears identical to the Northern Two-lined Salamander, and can only be differentiated by genetic testing and range.

In other news, I have requested / taken additional days off of work every week from here on, as I was finding that my photography wasn’t advancing when I was stuck at work all the time! I plan on taking full advantage of this new time off, and hope to be taking MANY more pictures!
