Epic Sunrise, Blackrock Summit, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Here’s another image from my beautiful sunrise at the top of Blackrock Summit in Shenandoah National Park. The night leading up to the morning was just as fun, with oriental flavored ramen, a giant, friendly rat, and a pack of coyotes howling just over the next ridge. Wouldn’t trade experiences like that for anything!

Earth Shadow over the Blue Ridge, Blackrock Summit, Shenandoah National Park

Just got back from a 1.5 hour sleep on top of Blackrock Summit in Shenandoah National Park. The light in the morning made it all worthwhile! There was fog drifting through, and spectacular colors in the sky looking towards the sun, but when I saw the deep pinks and blues of the morning’s earth shadow, combined with the fresh spring green foliage and valley fog, I couldn’t help but take some photos in this direction. As it turns out, this is easily one of my favorites from the trip.

A Coiled up Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) on Gravel, North Carolina

Here’s another snake for you guys! This Timber Rattlesnake, unofficially known as the Canebrake Rattlesnake when found in the swampy coastal plain, was found one morning crossing a gravel road. This was the second Timber Rattlesnake I have ever seen in my life, and my first photographs of one. I particularly liked the yellow cheeks found on this individual.

A Young Northern Scarletsnake (Cemophora coccinea copei) Crawling on White Sand, North Carolina

Here’s another snake from the North Carolina trip. This little snake was found under a piece of tin during a relatively cool rainy day. This was certainly one of my favorite finds of the trip.

Eastern Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus holbrookii) Standing on Pine Needles, Croatan National Forest, North Carolina

I have always liked the crazy eyes of Spadefoot Toads, and was really hoping to find one on this trip. Typically, they live under ground and under cover, and only come out a few select rainy nights to breed. Interestingly, as we were driving along one dry night, I pulled up next to this toad, and with one double-take, realized that it was a Spadefoot instead of the usual Southern Toads we had been finding. Storing him away for a night, I photographed him the next morning on some nice pine needles before letting him free.

Colorful Stormy Sunset over a Tidal Creek, North Carolina

After walking around in the rain all day, Andrew and I headed to a new location to drive the roads at night in an attempt to find various nocturnal frogs and snakes. As we made our way, I noticed that cloud cover was beginning to thin and a faint yellow glow was occurring. As time passed, the glow only got stronger until eventually the sun dipped below the cloud bank and lit up the entire sky in intense oranges and yellows. Not being near a suitable area to take a landscape photo, I tried to just enjoy the view, despite the fact that I was missing (photographically) one of the best sunsets of my entire life. To make matters worse (or is that better?) the sky opposite of the sun formed an intense rainbow. Man, it just doesn’t get better than that! Flying down the back roads, with an ever-dimming hope of capturing this light show in any way possible, we eventually came to a boat launch that overlooked a large tidal creek. The landscape wasn’t perfect, but the light more than made up for it. I grabbed my gear and ran down to the banks of the creek. This image is the result of my luck in finding that boat launch.

Eastern Rat Snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) Coiled into a Defensive Position, North Carolina

Well, I’m back from my week long trip down to North Carolina. This trip exceeded all of my expectations, and we (my friend Andrew and myself) ended up finding an absolute ton of reptiles and amphibians. I managed to photograph 11 new species, as well as one of the most insane sunsets I’ve ever seen. In this image I photographed an Eastern Rat Snake (in this color morph commonly known as a “Greenish Rat Snake”) rearing up in a defensive posture trying to strike at us while we took photos. Eventually he became very friendly and allowed us to pick him up.
