Adult Southern Toad (Bufo terrestris) Standing on Pine Needles, Francis Marion National Forest, SC
While very common through much of the south, this Southern Toad was a first for me. The Southern Toad can be differentiated from the American Toad mainly by looking at the ridges on top of the head. A Southern Toad will have two pronounced ridges, while the American Toad will not.

Nice photo of the Southern Toad. They frequent our yard as does the Giant Toad. As you mentioned, those knobs and crests on top of the head are the key to identification. They sure do look “warty,” don’t they?
