After a dawn of heavy fog at Great Falls National Park, Virginia, the sun eventually began to burn through. Making my way down to a large cascade, I started lining up compositions with the sun in the frame. To me, the sun was an integral part of the experience of that foggy morning that just begged to be included. By blending two exposures together in Photoshop CS3 I was able to carefully expose two separate photographs – one for the bright sky, and another for the darker water. As with any photograph, careful placement of essential compositional elements such as the sun, the mid-ground rocks, darker foreground rocks, and water ripples was crucial. In addition to the composition, I like the way the sun is casting shadows on the backsides of the rocks, as well as the way the strong light is enhancing the texture of the rushing water in the foreground.
