Foggy Common Loon Pair

I’ll be doing a series of these “Featured Photographs” throughout the life of this blog. Every once in a while (when I feel like being productive) I’ll post an image and talk a little bit about it. I hope that through my blog I can tell people more about my images - why I like them, where they were shot, any stories behind the photograph, etc.
Before I go on, I should probably mention that my girlfriend Kari Post (more on her in later posts) is always making fun of me for a little thing called “favorites”. You see, I like a lot of things. The world amazes me. This causes me to have any number of favorite things at one time. My favorite bird is the Common Loon. Or was that Great Gray Owl? Blackburnian Warbler maybe? Favorite mammal you ask? That would be the Flying Squirrel … or was that White-tailed Deer? The same thing happens with any subject - fish, insects, trees, rocks, places, cars, you name it. I am positive you will notice this with many of my posts! Now, with that out of the way, onto the photograph.
The photograph was taken this summer (07′) on one of my favorite lakes - Moss Lake; photographing one of my favorite birds - the Common Loon
. Moss Lake is a small picturesque lake in the Adirondack Park of Upstate New York. During the summer and autumn when the nights are cool, thick fog often forms in the morning. Thick fog is one of my favorite conditions to photograph in, and the fog on these lakes is among the thickest I’ve personally run into. On this particular morning I managed to find the resident pair of loons (lovingly named Checkers and Lily) in my kayak and began following them around. I believe that the habitat in which an animal lives is as important (and often as beautiful) as the animal itself. Because of this, I often use wide angle lenses in my wildlife photography. By using my wide angle lens I was able to capture the ambiance of the foggy surroundings, the pair of loons, and the island in the middle of the lake (the island has a lovely osprey nest with an even more lovely osprey chick that loves to call 16 hours a day - a fun camping experience.)
I hope that you enjoy this photograph. It will always have a special place in my heart - even when far away from New York I can look at it and remember one of my favorite places to be.

Hi Chris, great shot. Fog is great conditions, I too like the simplistic and minimalistic feel with just the gradient, island and loons! Beautiful work!
