Frozen Zen Ice Closeup, Northern Virginia

I’m currently at home with a little cold, but two mornings ago I made the most of the cold temperatures and visited a small stream in Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, Virginia to hopefully photograph some ice. Sure enough, there were some interesting ice formations in the stream, and I spent several hours in a small area photographing them. Here, I zoomed in quite close on a portion of ice with a curvy line in it. The pattern reminded me of a yin-yang type of thing!

Got a cold myself, so I can sympathize!

Really nice shot! Do you know what causes lines like these?

    Hi Paul,

    Hope you’re feeling better. I am :)

I’m not exactly sure what causes these lines, but as I was photographing them and watching the water and ice, I got the feeling that the lapping water under the ice made large pockets of air, that then froze into different bubble-like shapes … hence the curviness.

    Yep, I’m feeling better, thanks!

    And thanks for the explanation!

    God bless,

    Paul
