Great Blue Heron Standing in Front of a Waterfall
So, as luck would have it, I went out to Great Falls again yesterday, with the intention of photographing sunset, but instead having a ton of luck with the Great Blue Herons. I can’t complain! Instead of heading to their roosts like during my previous visit, the herons stayed out in the river fishing until after sunset. In this image, one of the Great Blue Herons is standing on a rock in front of a nice 20 ft+ waterfall, defending his space against another Great Blue Heron that had just flew in. In my typical favorite fashion of photographing the herons, I used a slow shutter speed to capture the water blurring by as they remain motionless.

This is absolutely stunning Chris. Excellent work, killer composition and the blurred water puts it over the top. Great work!

Astounding!!!! As a landscape, this would be awesome; as a birdscape, it is too good for words!
Happy shooting and God bless,
Paul

Thanks guys, glad you like it.
Funny you say that Paul … I was photographing this as a straight landscape with almost exactly the same composition about a half an hour before the heron flew in there. As you can imagine, I was pretty excited about his choice of perch.

Awesome shot! This is maybe the best one I have seen on your blog. About the camera club,I went to the 1st meeting but missed the last one. I have been working out of town and moved during the past month. Needless to say things have been hectic. I think the club will be cool though.

Hi Zach,
Thanks for the comment. Glad you like the image.
Did you move far, or are you still in the same general area?

Chris, I moved to Pulaski. It’s another twenty miles north of Central Square. Much closer to Lake Ontario (within 10 minutes) and also the wild woods of the Tug Hill. Hopefully I will get some time to go play with my new 40D ! Send me an email next time you come up.
