Icicles on the Potomac - Great Falls National Park, Virginia
Yesterday morning, with cloud cover scheduled to move in, I decided to try to photograph the sunrise at Great Falls National Park, Virginia. The sunrise was almost spectacular, with some key light being blocked by a bank of clouds at the last moment. However, since we’ve had about 3 days of below freezing temperatures, there were many interesting ice patterns to photograph despite the sunrise being a dud. This particular set of icicles was formed as waves from the rapids of the Potomac River broke against a rock, and then dripped off… slowly freezing and adding length to the icicles. Using a mid-telephoto lens, I zoomed in on this set of icicles and tried to time photos with some interesting wave action below.

Really neat shot. I love the combination of the static icicles and moving water. All of the textures and tones work awesome together in this photo.

I enjoy reading your photography tips. We tried to capture creative icicle shots last year without much luck. On one of your photos you used something black behind them and they were beautiful. We will try that this year. We got 2-3 feet of snow over the last few days with high winds. That should make for some nice shots. Have a great day! Patti

Hi Patti … thanks - glad you’re stopping in to read my blog and more importantly finding it useful! Wish I had 2-3 feet of snow right now.
