Sunset Cloud Abstract, Virginia
I photographed these sunset clouds two nights ago during a pretty spectacular sunset. I would have rather been at Shenandoah or something and gotten these clouds as part of a scenic image, but I think it’s important to make do with what you’re given when an opportunity such as this arises. I also find it interesting just how rare it is that some spectacular light comes along, whether it be sunrise or sunset. I doubt many people realize the time and perseverance involved in going to a place time after time hoping for some color in the sky!

Don’t you hate it when you are hoping for some color and it completely fizzles out? I like that you captured these darker clouds in front to help emphasize shape.

Absolutely. And the worst part about it - the most spectacular color comes about when you least think it will … like just before a storm when there is almost complete cloud cover but just a split remains for the sun to shine through. Going on days like these are always a gamble, but when it happens it makes up for all those overcast sunrises/sets.
Of course, and I’m sure you’ll agree, being out there even on an overcast day is a heck of a lot more fun than just about anything else.
